John Chaney was not only Temple University's, but one of college basketball's best coaches ever. In his 24 years coaching the Temple Owls Chaney led the team to 17 NCAA appearances, 20+ wins 15 times, and five elite 8 appearances in the NCAA tournament. His unique defense, the matchup zone, stifled, confused and branded temple as one of the toughest teams to have to play. When I was a kid I was a huge Temple basketball fan, and remember going to Mcgonigle Hall to see the team play in Chaney's heyday in the late 1980's. the crowd was unbelievably loud and the gym was so small creating a memorable experience for me. Chaney was hugely popular in the basketball community and had such lasting power, because he was more than a coach. He was a mentor for so many young men, and so many people that came up from tough backgrounds given a chance to succeed and prove that winning in life is an attitude. He was famous for his early morning practices, and sometimes infamous for his screaming matches with opposing coaches like John Calipari. But in the end, the infamy couldn't and wouldn't last because those same people that got in fights or screaming matches ended up becoming some of his biggest supporters/friends who always had respect for Chaney.
